Costa Blanca South

Welcome to the Costa Blanca south!

This area known as the southern Costa Blanca stretches from San Juan slightly north of Alicante - to Pilar de la Horadada which is the last town just on the border with Murcia, on the Costa Calida. The Costa Blanca South is mostly flat with fine sandy beaches, palm trees and salt lakes.

Without doubt a huge majority of visitors, who travel to the Costa Blanca South each year, do so to take advantage of the sun, the sea, and the white sandy beaches. During history this area of Spain was invaded by many different invaders, but in the 20th century - that of mass tourism brought a different kind of invasion!

Alicante airport is in the middle of the coast and only 30 minuets drive to Torrevieja on the N332, and also there is San Javier airport in Murcia, again only a 30 minuet drive, and plenty of UK low cost flights every day. The A7 motorway also runs parallel (toll road) along the coast.

The main reason of course for this is the wonderful climate, with over 320 days of sunshine each year and very low rainfall, with average temperatures in the winter around 19c, and in summer can soar into the 40's and for some young families this is just too much. Many families now prefer Costa Azahar for the climate is slightly cooler and even in August only reaches 30c, so better for young children, especially if holidays have to be taken in July and August. The Costa Blanca south has 50km of some of the finest beaches in Spain, most with Blue flags due too the cleanliness of the beaches and the crystal clear waters. The main beaches that are very popular are Cabo Roig, Guardamar del Segura, La Mata, La Zenia, Santa Pola, and of course Torrevieja. There is also a naturist beach Los Tusales at Guaramar.Today Torrevieja is well known for not only its tourism, but for famous Salt lagoons that surround the area at La Mata. These lakes have been designated as National Parks and home to a huge variety of bird species, with over 200 being sighted on the lakes, and are home to the pink flamingos. The huge salt mountains are now a tourist attraction, and the lakes produce over 500,000 tons per year!

Many people with arthritis come to the Costa Blanca to bathe in the salt waters...and within days feel better!

Like any Costa in Spain there is much to see and do, and the Costa Blanca South is no different. For families there is the famous Terra Mitica theme park near Benidorm, or the fantastic water park of Aqualandia. For golfers there is Villamartin, which is fast becoming a tourist destination located south of Torrevieja and home to three championship golf courses - Campoamor, Las Ramblas, and Villamartin, not forgetting Golf Bonalba and La Finca.

Another place to visit is Elche, the third largest city in the Valencian region, with its Basilica of Saint Mary, and the fantastic Palm Grove with 250,000 palms.
