Costa Blanca North

Welcome to the Costa Blanca North!
This beautiful part of the Costa Blanca stretches from Denia down to Bonalba (just north of Alicante) which is known as the Costa Blanca North. To confuse you even further, the inland region on this coastline is known as the Jalon Valley, which is a beautiful area of small white-washed villages, surrounded by miles of almond and orange groves (see Jalon Valley).
Authentic old Spain
On this lovely part of the Costa Blanca the jewel in the crown must be Denia, probably one of the most recognised on the Mediterranean coastline, where the Montgo Mountain resembles a sleeping elephant, and the famous landmark of the ancient castle is still intact. It is on the very spot where the castle now stands that the Greeks built a temple to the goddess Diana, and this temple was the origin of the city’s Roman name of Dianium. It is thought that the change of name to Denia was not until the 14th century (see page on Denia).
Beaches
Bathed by the warm Mediterranean, this coast is known as the White Coast because of its miles of fine sandy beaches. This part of the coast is very safe for bathing and Denia’s 14km stretch of coastline boasts many Blue Flag beaches, as do neighbouring Javea, Moraria, Calpe, Benidorm, and Altea, with their excellent quality and crystal-clear waters. Costa Blanca has 48 Blue Flag beaches in total.
Weather
This part of the Costa Blanca enjoys an excellent climate, with an average climate of around 24 degrees C. It is easy to see why the World Health Organisation named it as having one of the healthiest climates in world, where you can enjoy outdoor living at any time.
Transport
The Costa Blanca North can be reached by flying to nearby Valencia or Alicante airports which are both served by the low-cost carriers. The A7 motorway runs the length of the Costa Blanca, only a few kilometres from the coast.
History
Many invaders down the centuries – including the Moors –have left their mark on this coast, and one of the best examples is the castle in Denia which possibly makes this area the most recognised town on the Spanish coastline. Benidorm is famous for its fabulous Levante Playa (beach); and another impressive tourist attraction is the El Mirador del Castillo which was built in the 14th century against invasion from the Algerian and Berber pirates.
Fiestas
Like the rest of Spain this area has many spectacular festivals throughout the year. Possibly the most famous is ‘Fellas’ held in March, and the mythical fighting between the Moors and Christians in August. People travel to this region from all over Europe every year to see these breathtaking colourful fiestas, with fireworks that light the whole coastline! There is no better example of the joys of Spanish living.
A wealth of attractions
The area around La flor de Ponoig thrives in natural beauty, from the waterfalls and pools of the Alga, to the spectacular Penon de Ifach –a stunning 332m-high rock at the beach of Calpe. This coast has 21 yacht clubs and marinas, and it is a boater’s paradise. For families there is the theme park of Terra Mitica, inspired by the classical cultures of Greece, Rome, and Egypt, and the superb Aqualandia, one of Europe’s largest and most impressive water parks.
Sporting activities
With the area boasting over 320 days of sunshine a year, golfers love the Costa Blanca North as there are six excellent courses to choose from, including the world-famous La Sella championship golf course, a short drive inland from Denia. Apart from golf, there are numerous nature parks for walkers and hikers, mountain-biking, horse-riding, and it goes without saying all water sports, including scuba-diving in the crystal-clear waters off this coast.
